![]() And we do not support the upgrades that you want to do in game. "The reason why mods are not working on your copy is because we do not support mods for the title. "The game that you bought from us is working as intended and it is not broken," the rep explained. ![]() Tarkus also linked to a SimTropolis forum post from earlier this month in which an EA support rep acknowledged the limitations of the Origin version of the game, but insisted that it's behaving as it's supposed to. The NAM, as installed by default, has the following requirements: A 64-bit operating system More than 4GB RAM At least 1GB disk space A copy of SimCity 4 Deluxe The Windows version of the game must be updated to at least Version 1.1.638, with a separate 4GB Patch installed (included in the download. "Origin’s digital version of SimCity 4 Deluxe is not just unpatched, it’s unpatchable." In effect, this forces the user to remain at Version 1.1.610, deprived not only of the full function of the wide array of custom content available for the game, but of basic fixes to the game that have been available for 10 years," NAM developer Tarkus wrote. "This modification, however, changes the checksum of the executable, just as the NoCD hacks did, which not only causes it to be rejected by the NAM installer, it also prevents the EP1 Update 1 patch and the BAT Nightlight patch from being installed, as well as the official first-party content creation tools, like the Lot Editor and the Building Architect Tool (BAT). But the a href="">Origin is not capable of being updated because it modified the unpatched version of the game, 1.1.610, to replace the SafeDisc copy protection with Origin's online DRM. But the maker of the Network Addon Mod says gamers should be careful about where they buy it: The version of the game being offered by Origin is the unpatched retail release, and because of changes to its copy protection it cannot be updated, nor can it take full advantage of custom content and mods.Īs explained on the SimCity 4 site SimTarkus, the Network Addon Mod (NAM) requires a minimum of SimCity 4 version 1.1.638, the version that results from applying the EP1 Update 1 to the retail version of the game. SimCity 4 is more than ten years old, but given the relative dearth of SimCity games since it came out, it remains a popular way for fans of the franchise to get their fix. Turns out that the unpatched version sold on Origin cannot be updated because of changes to its copy protection. However, if one is okay with the five basic flavors of the traffic simulator and a full NAM Controller, then one can still avail themselves of the NAM's main benefits without having Java. The maker of the Network Addon Mod for SimCity 4 has warned gamers against buying the game from Origin. ![]() It's a nice thing to have, certainly, and I'd agree that it's worth noting. The ability to use the compiler is mostly of benefit to those who don't want everything installed, permitting them to operate with a leaner controller (or for crazy people like myself who are NAM developers, and need to quickly insert the new/revised RUL code they've written to the controller). The Controller Compiler also requires Java as well-though again, if you don't have Java, the NAM installer will just default you to a full build of the NAM Controller, which has all the code necessary to use all of the NAM's new transit network items. Well, one can still run the traffic simulator without Java-they will just have to use the presets from the installer, as a sizable percentage of the NAM's userbase does. Right now I don't remember all the critical fixes in addition to the patched game but other members can help here. Other mods to consider include terrain mods (water, beaches, forests/flora, terrain texture and so on), several bug fixes that tweak minor bugs, the SimPEG Agricultural Mod (makes farming more useful and worth sustaining into large town populations amd adds nice looking farm buildings), custom power plants (the default ones of the game are tiny!) and a slope mod for the land transportation networks (more realistic roads and rail, makes teep terrain more challenging). Most essential mod is the Network Addon Mod (NAM, current version is 36 but the 37th might be coming out soon), as it fixes critical traffic-related shortcomings and thus makes the game smoother. Make sure you get the Deluxe edition for full compatibility with nearly all the modded content out there. Steam's alright, Origin is shit because the game isn't sold with all patches nor is it patchable. Plus, every once in a while it goes on sale for as little as $4.99. Get it from GOG.com, the game' experienxe is just avout entirely offline and single player, no need for Steam access.
